What will effectively be a week-long stepladder tournament to decide the 2018 champion of the Breen’s Jubilee Trophy women’s soccer league begins 7 p.m. Monday at King George V Park in St. John’s.
That’s when Feildians Greensleeves will take on Mount Pearl in a matchup of the third and fourth seeds. The winner of that game will move on to play second-place C.B.S. Kirby United at 7 p.m. Thursday, and the victor of that contest advances to the final at 3 p.m., Saturday Aug. 18 where they will face defending champion and first-place Holy Cross Avalon Ford.
Those two games will also be at KGV,
The regular-season ended Thursday when the St. John’s Under-17s downed Mount Pearl 4-1 at the Gushue Complex.
The U17s finished ahead of winless Mount Pearl in points, but since they were participating in the Jubilee league on an exhibition basis, they weren’t playoff-eligible.
As well there were two regular-season games that had been postponed, but will not be played as they would not change the final standings.
One of those games would have had Feildians taking on Kirby. If the game had been played, win by Feildians would have left them both team with 25 points and with each having won twice in the regular-season matchups. However, overall goal differential would have been the tiebreaker and with Kirby already holding a 17-goal advantage in that category, it was deemed that a makeup game was unnecessary.
Holy Cross, which won a bronze medal at the national Jubilee Trophy competition in 2017, followed up with a dominant showing in the local league, winning all 15 of its games and outscoring the competition 96-3 in the process.
