League-leading Crusaders blank Paradise U17s 13-0

Jessie Noseworthy scored five goals as the Holy Cross Avalon Ford blasted the Paradise Under-17s by a 13-0 score in Breen’s Jubilee Trophy women’s soccer game at King George V Park in St. John’s Thursday night.

Teri Murphy, with two, Malorie Harris, Kate Hickey, Keisha Younge, Maria Mackey, Lauren Taylor and Emily Bailey also scored for the league-leaders and defending champions.
Twin sisters Julie and Jamie Crocker shared the shut out.

Officially, the league standings show Holy Cross as having an 12-0 record after scoring 83 goals and not allowing a single opposition marker through its first dozen games in 2019. However, the reality is the Crusaders’ winning streak is in jeopardy and what had been a season-long clean sheet now has one blemish.

That’s because of Holy Cross’s last game, played at KGV Monday. It saw the Crusaders’ opponents, Feildians Green Sleeves, grab a 1-0 lead, which they maintained until the 50-minute mark, when lightning activity in the area led to the contest being suspended.

The result — whether a Feildians victory, Holy Cross comeback win or tie — won’t be known until the remaining 40 minutes-plus of the game is completed at some unspecified future date. And the Double Blues’ Monday goal, off the foot of Stacey Hanlon, won’t become official until the game is actually done. But it will definitely count, just not now.

Hanlon had been the league's leading scorer with 13 goals, not counting her Monday marker, but Noseworthy vaulted ahead of her with her Thursday outburst, which gave the Crusaders striker 17 tallies on the season.

Thursday's contest was one of six on the Jubilee Trophy schedule for the young Paradise team, participating in the league on an exhibition basis. Paradise has only played one other game to date, losing 7-1 to the Strikers of C.B.S.

The St. John’s U17s, participating on the same exhibition basis, have played four Jubilee Trophy games so far, going 2-1-1.
