Senior teams will get a boost with Canada Games players

C.B.S. Kirby managed only a single win this season, but should be an improved squad for tonight’s semifinal game in the Breen’s Jubilee Trophy Women’s Soccer League.

Kirby and Feildians meet 7 o’clock tonight at the Topsail Pitch in C.B.S. for the right to play first-place Holy Cross Saturday for the provincial championship.

The final game of the year is set for 7 p.m. Saturday in Topsail. The winner represents the province at the Jubilee Trophy nationals in Surrey, B.C. in October.

Feildians and Kirby provided a preview to the semifinal Sunday night, with the Double Blues coming out on top 1-0 in the league’s final regular-season game. Stacey Hanlon had the goal, and also shared the shutout with Liz McPhail.

Feildians and Kirby actually finished three-four in the standings. The Canada Games squad was second, but that team played on an exhibition basis.

And seven of those Canada Games players will be in the lineup for either Holy Cross, Feildians or Kirby tonight and Saturday.

Kirby will have four players, including Sydney Walsh, who was an all-star keeper at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg. Also set to join Kirby are Beth Hynes, Jamie King and Destiny Mitchell.

Kristyn Lee and Briana Pender will suit up for Feildians, and Lauren Taylor will join the Crusaders.
