Sheppard, Pope take Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association monthly honours

Players on league-leading teams have been named the latest Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association senior players of the month of the month.
Taking honours for August are goalkeeper Braedon Sheppard, who backstopped Feildians to a first-place finish in the Johnson Insurance Challenge Cup regular-season standing and Jane Pope of Holy Cross Avalon, which won all 16 of its games this season, including a 2-1 decision over C.B.S. Kirby United, giving the Crusaders their third straight Breen’s Jubilee Trophy senior women’s title.
Pope scored the winning goal in that game and was named winner of the Ann Woodford Award as the most effective and sportsmanlike player in the contest. She was also a league regular-season all-sta.
Sheppard posted four shutouts in Feildians’ five-game unbeaten streak during August as they claimed top spot in the Challenge Cup standings to earn a double life in the league playoffs which begin Friday night at King George V Park in St. John’s.
That’s where Feildians takes on second-place and defending champion Holy Cross in the 1 vs 2 Page playoff (4:30 p.m.), with the winner advancing directly to Sunday’s final. That will be followed by an 8 p.m. matchup between the third-place St. Lawrence Laurentians and fourth-place C.B.S. That Pro Look Strikers. The winner of that contest will meet the 1-2 loser in a Saturday semifinal.
