Two long-time soccer stalwarts are being recognized by the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association for their outstanding commitment to the sport.
Trevor Paine of Happy Valley-Goose Bay will be recognized as an honorary life member, while Dorothy Hickey of St. Jacques will be presented with the NLSA Award of Merit.
Paine, a Hall of Famer, is originally from England who arrived in Labrador with the Royal Air Force. He stayed in Goose Bay after leaving the RAF in 1981.
He founded the Happy-Valley Goose Bay Minor Soccer Association in 1983, and served as its president for the majority of those 35 years. During that time, registration has increased from 120 players to more than 600 today. Paine can also be found coaching 120 participants in the HVGB Minor Soccer Association Tots program, a program that he initiated.
He is also the driving force behind the Labrador Cup, with 2019 representing the competition’s 25th anniversary. He has served as Mission Staff for the Canada Games, and organized Team Labrador for the provincial Winter and Summer games for the last 30 years.
Hickey has worked for Canada Soccer for more than 40 years, and during that time has overseen the growth and development of the Toyota national championships. She has been instrumental in managing the air travel for teams traveling to the competition and has worked across numerous international matches in Canada.
Hickey has been staff support to the Youth Committee and Senior Amateur Committee which amalgamated into the Competitions Committee. She is also a recipient of both the Canada Soccer Award of Merit and Canada Soccer President’s Award.
