ST. BARBE, NL – Camille Lavallee has brought home another medal in karate.
But he could have gone even further if not for a last-minute injury.
The St. Barbe’s man won a silver medal in the WKC World Karate Championships in Orlando, Florida in the 48-and-over category.
The tournament was held from Nov. 6-10.
Points are awarded based on the number of strikes.
Lavallee won his first two fights, the first going to double overtime, thus qualifying for the gold-medal match.
He also fought in the 42-and-over team category for Canada.
When he was asked to fight for Team Canada, he says he hesitated at first given that he had a gold-medal match the following day.
However, he agreed.
Unfortunately for him, in his first team match on Nov. 9, Lavallee suffered an injury after a kick to the ribs.
He had to bow out from the final in his individual category.
“I was kinda disappointed,” he told the Northern Pen.
But the 64-year-old has much to be proud of, taking home another medal as the oldest competitor in a tournament featuring fighters from around the world.
The WKC World Karate Championship will be held next year in Dublin, Ireland but Lavallee says he’s not sure if this will be his final go-round.
