The St. John’s Capitals claimed their third straight crown and 10th in the last 11 years by defeating the host Corner Brook Barons 9-5 Sunday in the final of Baseball NL’s 2018 junior A championship.
At Jubilee Field, St. John’s player of the game Ryan Morgan pitched the win for the Capitals in the decisive contest, with Andrew Flood taking the loss.
Doug King was player of the game for the Barons.
Morgan was named the tourney’s top pitcher, while lefty Matt Colbourne of Corner Brook was the selection as MVP. The Barons’ Braeden Lockyer was the top batter.
The Capitals and Barons had both finished 2-1 in the round robin of the four-team event, with Corner Brook winning their preliminary-round meeting in extra innings.
Mount Pearl and Conception Bay South each went 1-2, although C.B.S. was close to a much better finish as it lost by just one run to both St. John’s and Corner Brook.
