Goaltender Kyle Downer made 46 saves and Jon Caul’s goal with less than seven minutes remaining in the third period stood as the game-winner as the St. John’s Green Sleeves Caps edged the Southern Shore Puglisevich Breakers 4-3 Sunday in the opener of the East Coast Senior Hockey League final.

At the Southern Shore Arena in Mobile, Jeremy Nicholas has two goals for the Breakers, including one that brought the home side back to within one just a couple of minutes after Caul’s tally. However, the Caps and Downer withstood the late charge by Southern Shore, which pulled its goalie for an extra attacker late in the contest.

Games 2 and 3 of the best-of-seven series are Wednesday and Saturday at Twin Rinks in St. John’s, home of the first-place Caps.
