St. John’s coming off win over Niagara River Lions Saturday

The St. John’s Edge found their winning way Saturday night in St. Catharines, Ont., holding off a hard-charging Niagara River Lions 107-104 in National Basketball League of Canada play.

The win came on the heels of a 116-103 loss to the London Lightning Thursday night in London, Ont., which kicked off a four-game road swing through southern Ontario for St. John’s.

The Edge take on the Windsor Express today in a game that starts 3:30 p.m. NL time. St. John’s closes out the trip Wednesday in Kitchener, Ont. against the KW Titans.

Saturday night, it was Carl English once again who was tops for the Edge with 22 points. English is second in league scoring, averaging 24 points per game to London’s Royce White, who leads all point-getters with 25. White is the former NBA first-round pick, 16th overall, by the Houston Rockets in 2012.

Alex Johnson backed up English with 15 points and six rebounds and a key steal in the waning moments of the contest. N

Newcomer Ryan Reid, in his second game with the Edge, but making his first start, had 14 points and nine boards, to go along with two assists and a pair of blocked shots.

Reid was a 2010 second-round NBA draft pick of the Indiana Pacers, and appeared in five games with the Oklahoma City Blazers in 2011.

The Edge held a 14-point lead at one point in the third quarter, then withstood a River Lions rally to hang on for the three-point win and improve to 17-10 on the season.
