The St. John’s Maple Leafs take on the Valley (N.S.) Wildcats this afterno0n in the major midget round of 16 at the Chronicle Herald East Coast IceJam hockey tournament in Halifax.
The Maple Leafs and East Coast Blizzard were the lone entries from the Newfoundland and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League to make it to the playoff round. The Blizzard were knocked out earlier Saturday with a 3-2 loss to the Northern Moose of New Brunswick.
The Maple Leafs won all three of their preliminary-round game, allowing only one goal in each contest while scoring nine overall.
Reagan Seymour is the team’s leading scorer with two goals and four assists.
The Blizzard, who went 1-1-1 in the preliminary round where James Kennedy (1-3-4) was the team’s top scorer.
Ethan Stuckless scored twice in loss to the Moose, with Jack Keogh assisting on both goals.
As for the other provincial major midget teams, the Tri-Pen Osprey and Central IcePak each went 1-2-0. Most surprisingly, the Western Kings, the runaway leaders in the NLMMHL, were winless in three games, scoring just once.
