ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The defending champion OMT Shamrocks drew first blood in the 2020 St. John’s Molson Senior Baseball League’s final Monday, registering a 5-4 win over RMM Gonzaga Vikings at St. Pat’s Ball Park.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series goes 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pat’s.

Starter Matt Murphy and Scott Goosney combined to scatter six hits over seven innings for Shamrocks. The two recorded seven strikeouts, a couple of walks and two hit batters (both by Murphy).

Dan Connors (6.1IP, 2H, 4R, 1ER, 4BB, 3K) started for Gonzaga and was tagged with the loss. Ben Kennedy (0.2IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 2K, 1HBP) pitched in relief.

Shamrocks, the four-time defending champs, scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to rebound for the win.

Gonzaga’s Andrew Paul, who was three-for-three at the plate, was the only batter in the game with more than a hit. The Shamrocks’ Charlie Kelly and Ryan Sweeney of Gonzaga both had two-run base hits.

Shamrocks are also represented in the St. John's intermediate final, which begins 6:30 p.m. at St. Pat's, where the Green and Gold take on the Holy Cross Trinity Pub Crusaders.
