It was a notable weekend for a couple of Newfoundland hockey players in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Brett Budgell of Paradise, suiting up for the Charlottetown Islanders, scored in Charlottetown’s 4-2 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs Saturday night in New Brunswick. The big news, however, came Friday night when Budgell scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Isles beat the Sea Dogs 7-6 on home ice.

Budgell finished the game with two goals and two assists and second-star honours.

Also on Friday night, Dawson Mercer of Bay Roberts had two goals — including the game-winner — and an assist, and was the game’s first star as the Drummondville Voltigeurs beat the Victoriaville Tigres 3-1.

That effort comes off a one-goal, one-assist game Wednesday night in the Volts’ 5-2 win over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

North of Montreal Saturday night, in Blainville, Que., rookie Zach Dean collected two assists as the Gatineau Olympiques beat the homestanding Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 4-3 in OT. Dean, 16, has four goals and three assists in 13 games for the ’Piques.
