Bonne fete national de l’Acadie!

Aug. 15 is a day set aside to celebrate Acadian culture; it dates back to 1881! It was during the first National Convention of the Acadians held at Memramcook, N.B., that the Acadian leaders received the mandate to set the date. Grandma was proud of her Acadian roots and gathered whenever possible with family and friends to celebrate the day.

Aug. 15 is also the feast of the Assumption of Mary. I think you know where I’m going with this. ;) Over time, many feast days have become associated with weather lore. Grandma believed that if it rained on the feast day of the Assumption of Mary, it would rain until Sept. 8.

« Quand il pleut le jour de Notre Dame, il pleut jusqu'au 8 septembre »

Not literally, but a wet Aug. 15, according to Grandma, would indicate a soggy few weeks ahead!

I certainly don’t want it to rain on the wonderful outdoor celebrations that are taking place today but we are in desperate need of rain. With half of the month behind us, August’s rainfall totals are very low. Many communities right across the Maritime provinces have received less than 15 per cent of the normal monthly rainfall. So far this month, the rainfall in Halifax and Sydney is 13 mm; 14 mm in Charlottetown. Fredericton is up at 28 mm but half of that fell in a few hours. It’s been warm but not quite as dry across Newfoundland and Labrador. There, rainfall totals are just below 40 per cent for the month.

There is still lots of the month left, and things can change pretty quickly but I don’t see a lot of rain in our foreseeable future.
