More Moth Mania, this time from Lexington, Inverness County, N.S.
Mary Hankey writes:
I thought you might be interested in seeing this Hummingbird Clearwing Moth that has been around here the last few days.
It has been getting nectar from the wild Cow Vetch flowers that have started to bloom here in the last week.
Unlike other moths, they fly and feed during the day. You can actually hear them as they go from flower to flower, from their wings which flap 30 times a second.
While our Ruby-throated Hummingbirds can live eight to nine years, these moths live only four to five weeks. Like the bees, they're great pollinators and they were both busy today on the same plants. So fun to watch!
