For some, the end of September is a sad time. We bid farewell to summer, the gardens aren’t as pretty as they were and the sun’s golden glow fades from the western sky earlier and earlier each day. For seven years now, I’ve looked forward to the end of September.
Last weekend, for the seventh time, I had the pleasure of hosting the annual Dinner, Auction and Dance for Rocmaura. Rocmaura is a superb home away from home for 150 residents in Saint John, N.B.
More than 500 people – many in their finery – gathered at the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre last Saturday night. The event is not small – nor is the task of organizing it!
The Director of the Foundation, Sally Cummings, leads the charge. She works tirelessly for months and pulls the event together, year after year. It’s a sight to behold, but so too is the charge put on by the team of volunteers she has around her and the unwavering support from the community: energetic teenagers, members of the clergy, very successful business people, etc...
Everyone was there to raise funds, much-needed money that would stay in the community and make life a little easier for their parents, grandparents, that special teacher or the store owner who sold them penny candy decades ago – the gems of our society, our seniors.
I had the pleasure of meeting some of the staff from Rocmaura who brought residents to the dinner. Watching them watch us help them… was incredible!
I came to live in Atlantic Canada 21 years ago last month. For years, every time I went back to the farm in Bainsville, Ont., to visit my family, my sister Monique asked me when I was coming home. It took a while, but she eventually could tell that I was home – here in the Maritimes.
I want to personally thank everyone who takes time to help others. We don’t have to have lots of money to make a difference – time and a kind heart will do!
