As extra-tropical storm Zeta zips south of Sable Island, flurries are falling over parts of the region.
The tropical moisture is close to the centre of the offshore storm, but there's lots of cold air in its wake. As the weakening storm slides eastward and tracks south of the Avalon, an arctic high-pressure system will feed cold, dry air into the backside of the system, resulting in some snow.
Watch for snow squalls along north and northwest-facing coastlines tonight and early Saturday; snowfall totals should be less than five cm. Clearing skies will follow, and while there’s no rain in the forecast to dampen the spirits on Halloween, it is going to be cold. With just a few clouds and a Full Hunter’s Moon overhead, temperatures at sunset will be between one and four degrees; the north wind will make it feel colder than that.
Sunday is going to be a day of transition; the icy north wind will go back to the southwest and intensify overnight through Monday ahead of a developing storm. The area of low pressure is expected to track well north of the region, putting us on the warm, windy, and wet side. It might be a good idea to take the witches and the goblins inside before the high wind gusts blow through.
