Only 39 sleeps until Christmas, so it’s not too early for a parade! Santa and his helpers have many places to be between now and the big day, so he has to get started early. Tonight, Santa will be in Halifax.
I’ve been going to holiday parades for many years and I still get very excited about them. I took in my first Chronicle Herald Holiday Parade of Lights in 1998 and I remember the joy of seeing millions of twinkling lights. I had never experienced a nighttime parade before. If you haven’t, you really should – it certainly is enchanting.
Another thing I found to be quite magical is the generosity of the people who line the streets, regardless of the weather. I’ve watched the faces of children light up as they hand over toys for less fortunate youngster. I’ve seen teen-agers empty piggybanks into collection boxes and looked on as piles of non-perishable food grew to mountains ahead of Santa’s arrival.
In the spirit of the season, FEED Nova Scotia will be collecting non-perishable food and cash donations; C100FM and Cineplex will be collecting new, unwrapped toys. Oh, and don’t forget to bring your letters for Santa; the good people from Canada Post will be there, too!
