The St. John’s branch of the Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) held their 19th. annual and spring Shave For The Brave at the Avalon Mall on Saturday, April 27, 2024 in support of young adults living with, through, and beyond cancer. It’s their largest fundraiser which runs in schools, offices, public venues and communities from coast to coast. Among those young youth taking to the clippers of Keyin College hair dressing student Jenna Hayes on Saturday was Mount Pearl resident Dutch Stratton. A Grade 6 student at St. Peter’s Elementary School in his hometown, the 11-year-old let his hair grow for a few years awaiting the shave in memory of his school friends Sophia Crowley and Clarke Howell, also a hockey teammate of his, who both lost their childhood battle with cancer a few years back. Sophia passed away on February 10, 2022, age 10, while Clark passed away on September 4, 2021, age 12. In order to participate, shavers must agree to have their heads shaved with no guard, or donate at least 10 inches of hair and are also responsible for raising or donating at least $25 in order to receive an official Shave for the Brave iconic yellow toque.
