Today, they are teammates on the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Charlottetown Islanders, but Brett Budgell and Greg Kehoe of St. John’s have been best friends for over a decade, since their preschool days.

Budgell, who joined the Islanders midway through last season, is a winger and assistant captain for Charlottetown. Kehoe is a rookie defenceman who was plus-two in his first QMJHL game, a 4-2 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Friday.

That contest also marked the first time Budgell and Kehoe, both 17, had been teammates since the 2015-16 season, when the two helped St. John’s win provincial and Atlantic bantam AAA championships. Since then, Budgell has played with teams in London, Ont., Chicago and Charlottetown, while Kehoe has played for the East Coast Blizzard of the provincial major midget league and at Stanstead College in Quebec.
